| ROUTE 3 MAUD TO AUCHNAGATT (15 Miles) Moderate Start out on this route on the excellent Formartinc and Buchan Way (F&BW) cycle path and take a pleasant return route through traditional Buchan countryside back to Maud. In Maud, start in the car park adjacent to the old Station Buildings, part of which houses the Maud Railway Museum (seldom open) and take the south section of the Formartine and Buchan Way via the old track bed. the 7 miles to Auchnagatt. At Auchnagatt leave the F&BW to join the A948, turn left to head south to Ellon. Take care at this junction as the A948 road is busy. Turn left after 500m signed Gibseat, climb a small hill and continue on the road fora mile and at the next junction follow the road round to the right and pass Moss-side on your left. After passing Moss-side Cottage you follow the road round to the left with Elrick Moss on your left, Continue to the T junction and turn left to join the Stuartfield road. You pass little Blackpots on the left, and ahead is Mormond Hill and the old radar station. A946 Follow a long tree lined straight about 3 miles to Stuartfield and at the T junction bear right along the B9030. Head down the main street of Stuartfield left at the Square, Windhill Street. The road heads west out of the village, follow the road passing Scroghill on your left. At the top of the hill the white tower in the distance is Drinnies Wood Observatory. At Windhill take a tight right bend and continue a further mile to Parkhouse Farm. The road drops downhill to join the B9029. Turn left at the road junction and follow the road back into Maud, turning back into the Station Car Park just before the bend where the railway used to cross.. |
