Buchan History Tour:

The Neolithic long cairn of Cairn Catto lies in a field to the West of a back road linking the A90 Ellon/Peterhead and the A950 Peterhead/New Pitsligo roads. After visiting the cairn, proceed North to the A950 and turn left (West) for Longside village and churchyard. Carry on Westwards through Mintlaw to Aden country park (Heritage and farming Museum, ancient manuscript Book of Deer project), from which visitors may walk to Old Deer to see the ancient kirkyard.

On returning the A950, turn left (West) for the Abbey of Deer. Two km further West on the A950, turn right (North) on a side road to Strichen to visit the Loudon Wood recumbent stone circle in the wood to the right of the road, or White Cow Wood Cairn Circle to the left of the road. In Strichen visit the Recumbent Stone Circle and the old churchyard.

Take the A981 for Fraserburgh and in 7km turn right (East) on B9032 for the Memsie Cairn. Proceed (East and South on A92 and A90) through Rathen after visiting the old graveyard. (note there are many large Mansions in this area see history page ), and by a side road pass the Berrybrae recumbent stone circle (NK027571).
Return to the A90 and around 1km from Crimond (visit the old kirk graveyard and the RSPB visitor centre at the Loch of Strathbeg) turn left for the site of the medieval burgh of Rattray, at which the Chapel of St Mary’s and the castle mound can still be seen (NK085575 and NK087579) See history page. Travel South on the A90, at St Fergus visit the old kirk yard near the beach. Carry on the main road and turn right towards Inverugie, note the Motte on the hill (NK102486).

Visit the ruined castle of Inverugie (NK102483) and Ravenscraig (NK095487). Return to the main road and visit Peterhead, (Arbuthnot museum, Salmon House C16 and the old kirk yard on the links) see history page.

Leave Peterhead by the A90 pass the Reform Tower, head for the village of Boddam visit the ruins of the old Keith castle. Carry on the A90 and turn onto the A975 towards Cruden Bay 1.5 km from the turn off visit the wild ‘cliffscape’ of the Bullers of Buchan. Our last place of interest is 1km from the Bullers of Buchan, park in the Slains castle car park and walk the 2km to the castle (be very careful at both these places).
